Product Name & Description

The common mistakes eCommerce website done is copying manufacturers’ description. Sometimes if the product is self-made, the e-commerce owners don’t bother to write any useful information other than the material used. Don’t copy and paste the description, write your own well. Make it useful to your customers as a thorough description. Write the main selling point first then describe the other information after.

Your product name should also include the category. To illustrate, if you sell a jacket, include the word ‘jacket’ in the product name. Therefore, when someone searches for a ‘jacket’, your product has the chance to show up in the search result.

A site built on WordPress is already having the nimbleness expected of such a robust content management system. But, you need to give an extra effort to ensure that the speed is stable under any circumstances, even in high traffic conditions.

Why Speed Matters

[df_blockquote ver=”1″ border_size=”4px” color=”#0F0F0F”]That 40 percent of the visitors will leave a webpage if it takes more than 3 seconds to load – Akamai Studies[/df_blockquote]

By optimizing your website speed, you can give an enjoyable experience to both existing readers and new readers when they access your site and bait them to click on other pages in your website, which inadvertently will affect your Google page rank and advertising performance.

Before we start on optimizing our website, let’s test your current speed first, so we can check the differences later. For this you can choose from one of these websites.

Keep the result for now, we’ll compare it after we finish these series of tips on how to optimize website speed.

The Foundation of a Website

Check Hosting Service Provider

Choosing a trustworthy hosting company and resourceful package for website is crucial. Going for a free or cheap hosting solution is a big mistake for a number of reasons, one of the most important of which is that they would crack under pressure and sometimes without any pressures at all. Better performances aside, you will also get a more flexible plan to change some configuration in your site and perform server optimization to help reduce the page load time (you will found about this more below).

Get a Clean Coded WordPress Theme

A clean coded WordPress theme will support the performance of your site both on Google rank and Website speed. So while searching for aesthetic values, do ensure that the WordPress theme of your choice is also clean and responsive. The trick to check a theme’s performance is by testing their demo using the speed tools above. You can also check our clean coded WordPress theme here.

Use Content Delivery Network (CDN)

If your website/blog display lots of images across your pages you may need a CDN. By using a CDN service, your images will be copied and placed on several servers around the world, suppose someone accesses your site from the Dutch city of Groningen. A CDN will deliver your site to him or her by downloading files from a server geographically closest to Groningen. With bandwidth spread over so many servers, the pressure on a single one will reduce and response time will increase.

6 Tricks to Make Your Website Faster

Like when you choosing a theme, you also need to use a clean coded plugin in your site, plus using multiple number of plugins has an adverse effect on the page load time. Use diagnostic tools to identify those that are slowing you down and make sure to remove that are NOT required. My favorite plugin is P3 (Plugin Performance Profiler) this plugin creates a profile of your WordPress site’s plugins’ performance by measuring their impact on your site’s load time.

WordPress & Browser Caching

While many plugins have dubious effect to your site, but a well set up cache plugin is often cited as one of the best possible ways to speed up your website. Plugins Such WP Super Cache and W3 Total Cache, cache your WordPress posts and pages to static files. Viewers are then served with these static files, reducing pressure on the servers. If your website consists of largely static content, this is the ideal step forward. For more dynamic content oriented sites, knowledge of cache configuration would come in handy.

Browser caching, on the other hand, reduces the strain on servers by decreasing the requests per page. For very high traffic sites, web server caching services like Varnish proves to be very useful, especially when working in tandem with plugins like W3 Total Cache.

Compressed Website

A compressed web page files reduce the total size of your website and also reduce the transfer time between your servers to your reader. You can contact your hosting company and ask them to install Gzip in your website server. And yes, there is virtually no downside to installing Gzip in your site.

Enable Keep Alive

Keep-alive is using the same tcp connection for HTTP conversation instead of opening new one with each new request. You basically need to set HTTP header in your HTTP response. Same as gzip, you can ask your hosting company to install it for you .

Image Optimization

Another compression that you need to do is toward your images, I often see a blog that use 6 – 15mb images in their site. I know you want the show your latest collection in a best way possible, but let’s be smart about it, check this great plugin that will automatically do a lossless image compression every time you upload image(s) in your site. What’s not good about it? Your images are smaller and you won’t notice any difference in the quality of images.

Pingbacks, Trackbacks & Hotlinks

This is not a favorable option for many, but turning off the pingbacks and trackbacks can significantly speed up your website. It is only a simpler method of knowing about other blogs that your posts are linked to. But for a high traffic website, these have not so favorable effect on the bandwidth. Disable hotlinking and prevent others from linking to your site’s images. In most of the cases, this is akin to bandwidth pilferage and should be dealt with accordingly.

Database Optimization

If your website’s database is full of revisions of posts, pingbacks, trackbacks, spams and unapproved comments it is time for you to clean it up. Keep your database optimized and help your site being efficient and agile. To help you managing the database cleaning I recommend wp-optimize for this, but before installing or performing any cleaning process please remember to back up your database first.

Now let’s test it your site’s speed again, see the difference? or is it still the same? share your experience below!
